Give Attention To The Word

3-7-19

Proverbs 4:20-22NASB says “My son, give attention to my words; incline your ear to my sayings.  Do not let them depart from your sight; keep them in the midst of your heart.  For they are life to those who find them and health to all their body.”

This scripture is telling us to “attend” to His word.  This is an on-going process in the life of the believer.  Keeping the word of God before your eyes and going into your heart will bring life to you.  “You are what you eat.”  Have you ever heard that before?  You eat junk, and you will produce junk.  If you eat healthy food, you will yield a healthy body.  Why do we expect anything different when it comes to our spiritual lives?  If you never put the word of God before your eyes and ears (i.e. eat the word) except once a week, your spirit-man is going to be depleted of life.  This foundation scripture says that attending to the word and keeping it before your eyes and ears will bring life.  Now let us consider how one attends to a matter.

As an example, let us consider a nurse.  A nurse does not go down the hall to his or her desk and stay there for hours on end.  They attend to a patient by frequently going into the patient’s room to check on them.  The nurse will check their vitals and monitor the patient’s progress.  They are responsible for “attending” to that patient.  They are recording progress and dispensing medication.  The nurse is very familiar with what is in the patient’s chart because they have been “attending” to the patient.  So we must be with the word of God.  We need to “attend” to it so that we will become familiar with what is in it.  Just like a nurse is with his or her patient.  As we are keeping our eyes and ears on the word of God, we are “attending” to it.  Whatever you keep before your eyes and ears will get into your heart.  Whatever gets into heart will affect your life.

Proverbs 23:7 says “for as he thinks within himself, so he is”.  Do you want to have life?  If you do, you must give your attention to the word of God.  When you do it will change you.  Not only will it change you, but it will also manifest and change your life.  So make a conscious decision today to make the word of God your priority.  Jesus came that we might have an abundance of life (John 10:10).  It is found in His word, and it is yours for the taking.
